Energy Star Ratings

Introduction:

The energy star program was created in the early 1990s by the United States Environmental Protection Agency in an effort to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission generated by power plants.  Basically the energy star rating programs demonstrates the potential for reducing greenhouse gases and reducing global warming through energy conservation.

Initially it was a voluntary labeling program designed to identify and promote energy efficient products.  The energy star program began with labels for computer and printer products then significantly expanded to include residential heating and cooling systems and new homes. It also includes the energy rating for major appliances, office equipment, lighting, and electronics.

The EPA estimates that the program has saved more than $20 billion in energy costs.   The energy star program has helped spread the use of LED traffic lights, efficient fluorescent lighting, and power management systems.

Most consumers are already using appliances and tools with the energy star logo that saves them both energy and money on utility bills. The point is that the program helps prevent emission of greenhouse gases and protects the environment.

If looking for new household appliances and products, you should look for items that have earned the energy star logo on their labels. Products that have passed energy star tests can save energy and slash energy bills and also prevent greenhouse gas emissions.

Contrary to some beliefs, energy star ratings do not mean that there is a sacrifice in features, quality, style, or the utility of the products. The energy star ratings help the consumers to make intelligent energy efficient choices. Appliances that have passed energy tests meet strict energy efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and US Department of Energy.

If you are in the market to purchase new appliances, tools, or equipment for your home you should always look for the energy star rating on the manufactures label. Buying only energy start rated products will reduce your energy bills, contribute to reducing greenhouse gasses, and improve your home comfort.
