How To Install Lattice Around a Deck

Installing Deck Lattice

Most decks are built some distance off the ground leaving a space between the bottom of the deck floor joist and the ground. This space looks a little unsightly at best. A good way to finish out the deck and remedy the open space below the deck is by installing deck lattice. The lattice will prevent animals from going under the deck and causing damage to the underside of the deck.

Installing lattice around a deck is an easy project for any do it yourself homeowner. However, the time to install it can be cut down drastically when you have another set of hands to help you. There is a lot of tedious measuring, marking, cutting, and installing that two people could work much faster. I recommend you use plastic lattice rather than pressure treated lattice.

How to install lattice around a deck:

1.  The first step is to build a frame to attach theDeck lattice lattice to. If the deck is only about two feet above the ground a frame really isn’t necessary. Simply measure the distance to the ground and cut 4x8 foot lattice in pieces. Attach the pieces to the outside of the deck box frame using wood staples, galvanized nails, or screws.

2.  For deck that are higher than two feet a frame is recommended to attach the lattice to. The frame will make the lattice more stable and prevent it from warping. It also acts as a guide for your measurements so you always have a straight edge to work with. The frame should be constructed from pressure treated wood. Attach the frame work to the outside box of the deck using galvanized nails or screws.

3.  After the frames are installed take the measurements for the lattice pieces. Cut the pieces from a 4x8 foot of lattice and attach them to the frame using galvanized nails or screws.

4.  The most efficient way to cut the lattice is with a circular saw. Set a piece of plywood on either a stable surface or sawhorses. Insure that the edge is stable with a backing board beneath it to prevent the lattice from chattering and chipping.

5.  Adjust the blade so it will extend 1/4 inch below the lattice.

6.  Attach the lattice to the frame with wood staples, galvanized nails, or screws about every eight inches.

7.  A trim board can be installed over the joints for a more finished appearance.  Complete the project by painting or staining the lattice.

That is all there is to it. You deck will now have a completed look to it that you can be proud of.
