Deck Construction Tips

Deck Construction

Although deck construction involves a lot of hard work, most home owner can build a deck as a DIY project in a couple of weekends. Building decks does not require you to be an expert in carpentry. These deck construction tips will help you with your deck construction.

Construction of a deck attached to your house is a great idea not only because it is a place for entertainment, but also because it can help you save the money that you spend for an outing for you and your family. The most important prerequisites for deck construction are time, having some construction skills, the right tools and a strong desire to face the challenge. Some towns allow construction of a deck only if you have a building permit. Before beginning any construction project check with your local code officer to determine what the code requirements are four you town. A rough deck plan and a list of building material are normally required.  If you do not obtain the required permission you may be fined and the deck may be required to be removed.

Deck Construction:

If building a deck is beyond your skills get a neighbor or friend with the experience to give you a hand.  Keep the deck design as simple as possible. If your plans are too difficult the project may not work out the way you wanted it to which can be very frustrating. Only include those things that are important in the plan. Your design should consist of a simple platform accompanied by stairs, which match up with the platform. Many people try to experiment with the stairs and fail to achieve the desired result.

Selecting Deck Lumber:

The best wood for the deck framing of the structural elements is pressure treated. Many people tend to avoid pressure treated material as it used to contain harmful arsenic. However, now it does not have any arsenic content and is perfectly safe for use. It is not very expensive and it will last a very long time. Non-pressure treated wood can be less expensive but you will have to replace it every five years. If you are interested in investing more, high quality cedar wood is a good option for you.

Select the Right Fasteners:

Stainless steel fasteners (nails or screws) are perfect for deck construction with pressure treated wood. Some of the other metallic type of fasteners may cause corrosion to the wood and weaken its joints. The building codes in some locations require only stainless steel fasteners. Screws are preferred over nails as they are stronger than nails and make the job much quicker. A special type of galvanized screw is another that can give you the kind of finish you want.

Framing the deck

While setting up the lumber for deck building the crown of the structural members should be placed upward. This will ensure that all water from the deck boards can be drained off easily. This helps prevent wood rot. Fastening or screwing is another important aspect of deck construction. For pre-drilling holes in the wood to place the screws, you should use cordless drills. A regular electric drill often causes cracks on the wood because they run at a very higher speed.

Once you have finished installing the decking you will need to protect the wood from rotting. Avoid any solid color finish as they tend to peel off very easily and are difficult to maintain. Water repellent preservatives work the best for deck protection from sun, wind, and snow.

It takes a lot of patience to build a deck. By following these deck construction tips you will have a completed deck that you will be proud off.
