Dull marble can be returned to its once new condition by polishing it with a commercial marble polish that can be purchased any place that sells marble. Apply a small amount of marble polish to a cleaning cloth and scrub the surface in small circular motions. Let dry, wipe off the residue and polish with a paste wax.

·    Stains are more difficult to remove. Most stains can be removed with peroxide but if it’s an oil stain you will need an absorption compound to absorb the oil. Corn starch works well at removing most oil stains. Apply it to the stained area and let stand for a while before wiping it off. Scrub the area with a detergent, rinse with clear water, dry, and wax.

·    Rust stains are common on bathroom marble tops caused by water. A common commercial rust remover will remove rust stains with little effort. After the stain is removed, wax the surface with a paste wax.

·    Scratches and nicks can’t be completely removed but they can be diminished by buffing and polishing with a marble polishing compound and wax with paste wax.

·    Marble is a porous material and should be treated with marble sealer before waxing. To keep marble tables and counter tops in good condition they should be sealed and waxed periodically. Once a year should be adequate for tables and more frequently for bathroom and kitchen counter tops.

·    Repairing marble top nicks and scratches by polishing is easy; however, a broken top is more difficult to deal with. A clean brake can be repaired. Marble dealers have the facilities and equipment to cement broken pieces back together and restore the surface to its natural appearance. These types of repairs should be left to the professionals.
