Trash Compactors

Trash compactors have been use in the home for approximately thirty years. They save the homeowner money by reducing the frequency of trash pickups and the number of trash bags that are picked up each time. If you are having a twice a week or more scheduled trash pickup you can reduce that to one by using a trash compactor to compact your trash. A good quality trash compactor can actually reduce the volume of trash by as much as two thirds or more. This is a must appliance for large families where trash seems to build up quickly, overrunning the trash bins and garage. Most trash compactors today are made to fit most all kitchen sizes and configurations, either under the counter or freestanding.

Although there are many different styles of trash compactors on the market to choose from, most trash compactors have similar features. You will find that from one compactor to the next, they all have similar features:

  • 1.5 cu. ft. or  more capacity
  • 1/3 HP compactor motor
  • Anti-jam system
  • Tilt sensors
  • Toe bar draw opener
  • Removable key knob control
  • Noise insulation
  • Tilt away basket for easy removal of bag
  • A caddy for plastic or paper bags
  • An air freshener compartment
  • On/off  security control key
  • Ram force of up to 5,000 pounds.

A good quality trash compactor can reduce your weekly curbside pile of trash up to 75% and make the trash itself more manageable by having smaller easy to handle trash compactor bags.   Rather than having a built in trash collector installed in your kitchen base cabinets, you could purchase a convertible style compactor. They save precious cabinet space. Most freestanding units are designed with finished tops so you can also enjoy a little more counter top space. Under-the-counter models are usually installed under your counter top just as the dishwasher is during the kitchen installation. To install an under counter unit after the kitchen is completed means that you will have to give up some under counter space for the trash collector. This makes the freestanding unit more attractive.   Most home improvement centers and kitchen supply centers have a wide variety of trash compactors available that will suit your need. Shop around, you will find that the prices are very competitive.

Safety features are also important when buying any appliance, especially a trash compactor. Make sure the model has an anti-jam system so the unit does not become jammed as the trash is compact. Tilt sensors are important in that they will stop the compactor from operating if it is sitting on an uneven surface. Key knob control prevents any accidental operation from small children.
