Microwave Ovens

Did you ever wonder how we survived before the microwave oven entered our lives? It has been one of the biggest energy and time saver inventions in modern time. We use it to heat just about everything from baby bottles, pizza, leftover food, popping popcorn, preparing complete meals, and heating a cup of water for tea. The first generation of these ovens were compact microwave ovens and very limited is size and capability but within a few years they developed into a household must have item. And to top it all they produce no heat while cooking your favorite foods. You can cook a meal for your family and not sweat in the kitchen during the hot summer months as you cook. Microwave ovens are convenient, affordable, and designed with multiple features.

A microwave oven works on the principle of a magnetron tube. The tube produces microwaves that enter the oven through an opening within the top of the cavity. As microwaves move in a straight line, they do not cook evenly. To compensate for this there is a turntable so microwaves are more evenly distributed within the oven. You may not be aware but unlike regular ovens microwave ovens cook from the inside out.

When shopping for a replacement microwave oven, consider the following suggestions:

  • Choose a size that fits the size of your family. For full meals you want to choose a microwave oven that is large and offers high power.

  • It is imperative that you use the correct cookware in a microwave oven. Most dishware is marked to indicate if it is usable in microwave oven. Insure that you purchase correct cookware.

  • Not all microwave ovens have the same features such as timers, defrosters, warmer, and delayed cooking. When purchasing a microwave oven look for these advanced features to get the most out the oven.

  • Consider where you are going to place the oven, on the countertop or in a built-in cabinet arrangement.

  • Purchase an oven that has the sufficient power to meet your needs. A midsize Microwave Oven (0.9 cubic feet to 1.2 cubic feet) produces 800 to 1,000 watts where a full size (1.3 cubic feet and up) produces more than 1,000 watts. The higher the wattage the more heat is available.

  • Consider a microwave convection oven combination. The convection combination combines radiant heat with the microwave heat. These two combined features speed up cooking and allow the inside of meat to be juicy while the outside is cooked and browned.

The microwave oven has been a great time and energy saver for nearly thirty years and they just seem to be getting better. Modern microwave ovens are equipped with the latest high tech features that digital technology can provide. When you shop for a replacement, consider these suggestions and purchases a microwave oven that fits your family needs. The chances are that you will have your microwave oven for a long time.
