Carpet Spot
Cleaning
Removing spots from carpets or rugs can be a simple or tedious task, depending upon the spot and how long it has been on the carpet. The easy way to deal with carpet spot cleaning, call the carpet cleaners but you can really do it yourself for a lot less money. There are many carpet spot cleaning products on the market designed to take out spots and stains of all kinds and when they run out there are the old home remedies such as lemon juice, cold water, and a water mixture of Clorox bleach. You should definitely stay away from Clorox bleach. It may clean the spot but will leave a bleach spot in its place. The best product that I have found for this task is the commercial product “Shout”.
It
may take more than one application to remove the most
difficult spots but generally it will remove most kinds of
carpet spots quite easily.
If a second
application is required repeat the process again. It it’s a
troublesome spot it may be necessary to let the spot remover
soak overnight, or a few days.
Here are a few general guidelines for removing carpet
spots:
If the source of the spot is from pet fesses, urine, or vomit disinfect the area with Lysol or an equivalent disinfectant. If the spot is from a petroleum source such as tar, asphalt or gum you may have to use isopropyl rubbing alcohol to dissolve the substance first and then remove the stain. In addition to Shout, hand dish washing detergents which do not contain lanolin or bleach may be used. To make a dishwashing detergent cleaning solution, mix 1/2 teaspoon of a hand dish washing detergent with 1 qt. of water. Dawn and Joy are both excellent spot cleaning detergents. Any large amount of foreign matter should be removed before attempting to remove that stain. A putty knife may be necessary to remove foreign mater such as gum or tar.
