How to Remove Cat Urine

Introduction:

Oh how to cat lovers love their cats! When the cat is still a kitten and you are still trying to train it to use the litter box or go outside, it is highly likely that you will have to be cleaning up cat urine. There is nothing more nasty smelling than cat urine. Most cat lovers have confronted the dilemma of how to clean cat urine.

Well, it isn’t all that difficult. Here are some tips on how to remove cat urine.

Remove cat urine from carpet:

No matter what your technique you use for cleaning cat urine, almost every method begins the same way by blotting up as much of the cat urine as possible with a clean cloth or paper towel. Press the cloth or towel down for approximately 30 seconds to absorb the urine. Remove the towel and repeat the process until the area is fully dried. Rinse with clean cool water and then blot the area dry again. This will get the urine out of the carpet but now you must deal with the odor.

Removing cat urine odor:

Plain old baking soda is the best method. After dampening the area with water, sprinkle baking soda over area. Rub the baking soda gently in and let dry for about thirty minutes. Brush or vacuum to remove the dry baking soda.

You can also use white vinegar to remove the odor. Mix 1 quart of warm water and 1/2 cup of white vinegar together and then dribble the mixture onto stain. Place towels over the area and put something heavy on top to absorb the mixture. After approximately an hour remove the towels. You may want to experiment with this technique on a piece of carpet that is hidden from view such as in a closet to insure that it does not stain the carpet.

Upholster furniture:

It you can remove the cover from your upholstered furniture wash the covers in your washing machine if they are machine washable. If not try the following procedures:

Dab the stains with a soft clean white cloth or paper towel to absorb the stain. If a solvent or detergent is needed, pour it onto a clean cloth not directly onto the upholstery. Gently use a circular motion to work from the outside in. Dry immediately with a hand held hairdryer on a cool setting so you don’t damage the fabric.

Hardwood floors:

Blot the wet area immediately with a rag or paper towels. Wash the area several times with white vinegar then rinse thoroughly with warm water and blot dry with paper towels. Apply an odor removing bacteria or enzyme cleaner to the area to remove any lingering odor. Be sure to read the instructions carefully before using these products.

If you cannot remove all the stain from the wood floor try lightly sanding the stained area and resealing the wood surface.
