How to Clean Basement Mold

Remove Basement Mold

Introduction:

Discovering that you have got mold in your basement can really be very shocking because you may not how to clean basement mold and how to prevent it from coming back. Cleaning mold isn’t difficult but eradicating it permanently is more difficult to insure that the problem isn’t going to happen again. Don’t rush over the process of mold clean. You must make sure that you have eliminated the origin of the mold to avoid going through the clean up again and again.

Getting to the source of the mold origin is the only way of dealing with it and making certain that the situation does not come back.

The way to illuminate the source of the basement mold is to do a comprehensive inspection that includes the foundation all around the house and especially the basement area. In addition, any basement carpets should be thoroughly checked for any evidence of mold. Check under the carpet for mildew and black mold. You should also look at the ceiling area, especially if it’s a dropped ceiling. Moisture from water pipes often settles on the top of ceiling tiles and form mold spores.

How to clean basement mold:

1.    Remove all carpet material and inspect it for evidence of mold. If the carpet has any evidence of mold it should be discarded as it is not likely that you will be able to effectively clean the mold from the carpet.

2.    If there are heat or air conditioning ducts in the basement they should be sealed to prevent mold spores that may be liberated from entering the duct work.

3.    Mix a cleaning solution of 50% Clorox and water. This is a very strong solution so be sure that you wear proper eye protection and rubber gloves.

4.    Clean the entire wall and floor surface with a stiff brush and a liberal amount of the cleaning solution.

5.    Thoroughly scrub the area. The Clorox will kill any mold or mold spores on contact.

6.    Wipe any solution residue and let the basement thoroughly dry. This could take a couple of days unless you use drying fans.

Unless you effectively eliminate all the mold spores you will be repeating the clean up process again in a few weeks. To effectively prevent a reoccurrence you must eliminate any wetness in the basements. Improving basement airflow will help keep the basement dry and prevent mold.
