Cleaning Water Damaged Homes

Overview: Home flood damage is a common occurrence in many locations, especially if your home is located in a flood plain region or near a major water way. A water damaged home can be a very difficult problem for a homeowner to deal with by himself. You may need a flood restoration professional to help clean up the mess and restore your home.

Flooding and water leaks can occur suddenly without warning and the home owner must move quickly to stop the source of the water leak, if possible. There is always a serious risk of mold spores beginning to grow and causing further damage if water is allowed to remain in the house. If mold is allowed to grow in a house the cost of repairs increases significantly. The value of the property will also be negatively affected because of the mold contamination. Any time mold is allowed to grow in a property, a potential health risk is created as many people are allergic to mold. The following suggestions are offered to help in cleaning water damaged homes and water damage restoration of the home.

If the source of the water leak is from a plumbing related issue, the first step is to shut off the water at the main water supply line and then to call a plumber to make repairs. The plumber will be able to stop the leaking water and repair the piping. If the amount of water leakage has been significant a qualified water restoration company might be required. The homeowner should be very proactive and quickly call in flood restoration professionals to minimize the seriousness of the water damage to the house.

Keep in mind that water should not be allowed to sit in a house for any length of time. Sitting water will generally lead to mold growth and turn a minor repair into a major disaster. The purpose of the flood restoration company is to dry the water from the home and its contents and restore the home to its pre-flood condition.

The flood restoration technician utilizes a variety of specialized equipment such as powerful fans, dehumidifiers, and carpet cleaning equipment to remove the water from and clean walls, carpets, furniture, and appliances. If the water damage has penetrated the sheetrock walls and saturated the insulation a major restoration may be necessary that includes removing all the damaged sheetrock and insulation and replace it with new material.

Some of the water damage restoration may be done by the DIY homeowner but in most cases because of the need for expediency professional help may be required.
