Cleaning Painted Cement

Overview:

Painted cement floors are a great alternative to wood floors, tile or carpet. Many homeowners with garages find that painting cement floors is very attractive and adds value to a home. Garages with painted floors are easier to keep clean than raw cement floors. Painted floors can be very modern in appearance and design. Cement floors are usually painted with epoxy paint for durability.

In addition to painted garage floors, outdoor patios and walkways can also be painted, turning a drab gray slab into a bright, colorful work of art. These painted surfaces do require periodic cleaning. Cleaning cement floors and walkways is an easy process. The following suggestions are offered for cleaning your painted cement. This is an easy DIY project.

1.    Fill a pail with cool clean water from the tap.

2.    Add a mild detergent to the water and mix it thoroughly.

3.    Using a soft mop or sponge, dip it into the sudsy water.

4.    Remove the mop or sponge from the pail and wring out the excess water.

5.    Using a circular motion wipe down the painted cement surface. Do not press so hard as to damage the painted surface.

6.    Continue to wipe down the painted surface, dipping the mop or sponge into the sudsy water often until the entire area is clean.

7.    Apply a water based sealer to the painted cement for extra protection and easier cleaning in the future.

I do not recommend using a bleach mixture to wash painted cement surfaces. It will fade the paint just after a few uses requiring the surface to need repainting. Most home improvement supply centers carry detergents for cleaning painted cement surfaces. In addition they carry a water based sealer to apply to the surface. The sealer will help keep the painted cement clean and protect it from severe staining.
