How to Choose Roofing Shingles
Roofing Shingles
Introduction: The most dreaded DIY home
improvement task is replacing the roof.
Unfortunately it is one of those tasks that every
homeowner must deal with every twenty to thirty
years, depending on the quality of roofing shingles
that are installed.
Knowing how to choose roofing shingles that are
right for your home will shorten the time between
replacements and will affect the overall look of
your house. If you have no idea about roofing
shingles, products and materials and you end up
choosing the wrong ones, you may risk your home to
future leaking and damage. And the wrong style or
color is critical so your home remains attractive.
If you do your homework and give serious thought to
the final outcome, your roof will last long, look
good and withstand severe weather conditions.
Unfortunately, choosing the right roofing shingles
is difficult. There are so many different roofing
shingle styles and roofing shingle colors available
that they all seem to look good and appealing
before they are installed on the house. It is easy
to get confused on just which shingles are right
for your home.
A review of the different roofing shingles:
1.
The most common shingles are the 3 tab roofing
shingles. These are one of the most inexpensive
shingles available in the market. They can give
your roof a smooth and more defined look. Most
manufacturers give a 20 to 30 year warranty but
most of these shingles will start showing signs of
deterioration within 12 to 15 years. You must
consider your location before choosing three tab
shingles as there are restrictions in some areas
that don’t permit the use of them because of the
weather.
2.
Another type of roofing shingles are the metal
roofing shingles. These shingles are very durable
but are very expensive, especially if they are made
of copper. Tile or ceramic roofing shingles are
another option. These are very good in areas where
the climate is always warm, but are not recommended
for cold climates. And like metal roofing shingles,
they can be very expensive as well.
3.
Another option is the architectural roofing
shingles. These are durable shingles which are made
from quality materials. These can last from 30 to
50 years and can withstand different weather
conditions. These are not very expensive but also
not cheap either. They can resist wind up to 120
mph and also resist fire as well.
How to choose roofing shingles is not easy. Before
deciding always consider there durability and the
life span. After reviewing the different types of
roofing shingles purchase the best that fit your
home based on your location and budget. But keep in
mind that it is not a good idea to choose roofing
shingles based on budget alone. Think in terms of
the long run so you can postpone replacing them
again for many years.
