Home Improvements

Home Improvement – Home Remodeling – Home Additions

Introduction: Home improvement is the process of making change to your home to improve it in some way whether it is for looks, functionality or an upgrade to keep up with styles and fashions. Home improvement projects, home remodeling and home additions are usually performed by professional home improvement contractors, tradesmen, handy-men or by yourself.

Many homeowners prefer to do their own home improvements which brought about the term do-it-yourself (DIY). DIY home improvements has became a $15 billion growing industry during the past twenty years that gave rise to the home improvement stores and supply centers such as Home Depot, Lowe’s and many others. These building supply centers cater to the DIY homeowner and small home improvement contractors by furnishing just about anything required for home improvements, repairs or to build and furnish a complete house.

The term home improvement and home remodeling covers many different tasks and activities. It includes:

a. Wallpapering

b. Upgrading kitchens and bathrooms

c. Laying carpets and hardwood flooring

d. Cellars and attic remodeling

e. New extensions

f. Landscaping

g. Interior decoration

h. Combining or dividing rooms

Home repair is not the same as home improvement. Home deals with activities that rectifying faults and defects in the house such as; repairing burst pipes, roof leaks, and faulty wood work. More specifically, home repairs deal with rectifying problems with the home rather than home improvements. Many home repairs require the expertise of a professional contractor or tradesmen because they are beyond the capability of most DIY homeowner.

Whether you are preparing to do a DIY home improvement or a home repair, the first and most critical step is to formulate a plan. The plan should include the following as a minimum:

  • Define specifically what changes you want to be made

  • Determine the cost

  • Develop a budget for the project

  • Determine how much time will it take

  • Source of material

  • Is professional help required

Working without a plan is not the best approach to successfully complete a home repair or home improvement. A well thought out plan will help avoid cost overruns, time overruns, insufficient or the wrong material, and a poorly completed project.

Nearly every homeowner wants to improve their home or make their own home repairs. If you are a handyman you can save a great deal of money, approximately 30% to 50%, by doing these projects yourself. The best place to start is to review home improvement and self-help books, visit home improvement supply centers or attend a home and garden trade show. You can get lots of ideas from these and then all you have to do is to put your ideas into action and start your planning.
