Farmer’s Porches

Introduction: A farmer’s porch, also known as an open porch, is really just a covered deck that is supported by sturdy beams around the outside edge and tailored railings.

The porch may be on the street side of the home, either end, the back, or it may wrap all around or part way around the home. Whatever the type may be porches are a welcoming introduction to the home and adds dimension and character to the home.

history of home construction in America. Essentially it was introduced in the rural communities of early New England. The porch offered protection to the home from the winter weather as well as additional living space during good weather. In the more suburban communities the porch was enclosed with glass windows and often referred to as a piazza. Today the farmer’s porch is part of many rural home designs. There are several different styles and farmer’s porche designs.

Elevated Farmers Porch

A typical farmer’s porch encompasses the front of the home. It may be elevated with a very wide open staircase leading up to the porch or it can rest flat on the ground. Those that are elevated often have ornate posts and sturdy railings. They often incorporate white lattice beneath the structure to provide a more polished look and keep out animals.

Ground Level Farmer’s Porch

The ground level farmers porch maintains similar features to the elevated porch. However, they may include a single step as opposed to a full set of stairs leading up to the porch deck. Like the majority of farmer’s porches this style often incorporates porch swings, rocking chairs and comfortable outdoor furniture.

Wrap-around Farmer’s Porch

The wrap-around porches allow more room and add size to a home. Porch Wrap-around farmers porches are exactly that: They wrap around the front of the structure. Rather than encompassing only the front part of the home they wrap round either one or both corners of the house. They can incorporate any of the features of elevated or ground-level farmers porches.

Southern Farmer’s Porches

Southern farmer’s porches are a trademark tradition of the south. They incorporate the south country feeling of the northern farmer’s porch. They often are supported by large columns as opposed to thinner and less intricate supports seen up north.
