Building Material Remodeling Trends

Going Green with Modern Remodeling Material

Introduction:

New home building material remodeling trends continue to evolve as homeowners and contractors look for less expensive and environmental friendly building material. Whatever the remodeling project might be; a kitchen, bathroom or a basement, homeowners and builders are looking for home remodeling materials that have a minimum environment impact.

For example, wood flooring such as bamboo flooring has become increasingly popular remodeling material because it is a renewable material resource that is also fast growing. Bamboo is much faster to grow to harvest than other woods such as oak, maple and birch. These remodeling products are often referred to as “green products” because they are environmental friendly.

In addition, lighting remodeling is quickly moving to less expensive and energy saving bulbs and fixtures.  Homeowners are converting lighting towards incandescent light bulbs and LED’s to save money on energy cost. Both of these new light bulbs only use a small fraction of the energy that incandescent light bulbs do.

Metal roofing has also increased in home construction use.  More and more homeowners are elect to go with metal roofs because they last much longer than traditional asphalt and fiberglass shingles. The difference in cost is very little and a metal roof will last for many decades as opposed to shingles that only last for 20 or 30 years.

Installing solar panels on residential roofs is also a growing home remodeling trend. Many solar panel manufacturers offer panels that look nearly identical to skylights and are very efficient. However, solar panels are effective at gathering the suns energy at lower latitudes than northern regions. If the payback is longer than twenty five years, solar panels may not be a cost effective investment. However, if you live in the lower latitudes, say around thirty degrees north or south of the equator then just two or three solar panels positioned properly on your roof can provide a substantial part of either the electricity or hot water daily needs for the home.

Using recycled building material is in use more today than ever before. Recyclable material is used in flooring, exterior sheathing and insulation products like blown in fibrous insulation made from recycled newspapers and cardboard.

Hardwood floors taken from older houses are often being recycled today. Old hardwood flooring boards that have been removed from old homes are being restored to their original beauty and then reinstalled in new homes.

Fiber cement siding is a growing home remodeling material trend. Fiber cement siding holds up better than wood clapboard siding and looks richer and is more durable than vinyl siding and wood siding. In addition, it is a lot less expensive.

While planning your next home remodeling project take a look at all the new building material remodeling trends before deciding on the material you plan to purchase.  Many of these new building materials will save you money and save vital resources.
