Saving Water in the Bathroom

Introduction:

Although approximately 70 percent of the earth's surface is covered with water, less than one percent of it is suitable for consumption. Most of the remaining 99% of the water on the earth is either sea water or water that is practically contaminated, making it unfit for human consumption.

With the increasing population of the earth it is critical that we do all we can to preserve our supply of potable water by consuming less. Every home can make a difference by saving water in the bathroom by just making a few small changes in daily habits.

The bathroom is where most of the water is used in the house. We all can make a lot of difference by saving water in the bathroom without having to suffer any major inconvenience. A few small changes in our daily bathroom habits can make a big difference. Here are some water saving tips for water conservation in the bathroom and reducing our daily water consumption.

  • Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth and rinse out the sink when you’re finished rather than letting the water run for several minutes.

  • Capture shower or bath water while waiting for it to change temperature. The excess water can be used for watering plants or washing vehicles.

  • Don’t let the water run down the drain while waiting for it to get hot before filling the tub for a bath. Put in the plug and adjust the water temperature as necessary as the tub fills.

  • Don’t use the toilet as a garbage or trash disposal. Only flush the toilet when disposing of sanitary waste. Depending on what kind of a toilet you have you use approximately 2 – 5 gallons of water every time you flushed it.

  • Don’t let the water run while shaving. Fill the bottom of the sink with a few inches of hot water to rinse your razor.

  • Install a low flush toilet. Older toilets use about 4 to 5 gallons of water per flush. Newer low flush toilets only use between 1.5 to 2 gallons per flush. This can add up to approximately 15,000 gallons of water saving a year per toilet. Kohler manufactures a variety of water saving toilets in many different styles. A DIY homeowner can easily change a toilet in an hour using common household tools.

  • Don’t take those 20 to 30 minute showers. It may be comfortable standing under a hot shower but any additional time longer than what is essential to bathe is simply wasting water.

  • Change your shower heads to a water efficient shower head or a hand held shower. This will reduce water shower consumption by approximately 20%. Again, Kohler has a wide variety of low flow shower heads and hand held showers to choose from.

We all can reduce our water consumption in the bathroom by changing our habits in small ways. Water cost in some communities with public water is extremely expensive and the price is constantly going up. You can reduce your water consumption and save a lot of money by following these water saving tips.
