Kitchen Remodeling Ideas

Remodeling a Kitchen

Introduction: Kitchen remodeling seems to be a near constant project because there is a never ending list of kitchen remodeling ideas. Some kitchen remodeling projects are small such as adding a kitchen cabinet or a new appliance but many kitchen remodeling projects are major new redesigns. Kitchen remodeling may just entail kitchen cabinet refacing or complete cabinet and counter top replacement.

If you are thinking about remodeling your kitchen or in the process of building or remodeling a home, here are some kitchen remodeling ideas for consideration.

For many homes the kitchen is the most used room in the house. Because it is so often used, it must function in the way you like and provide a welcome atmosphere. When the kitchen counter tops and cabinets become worn and in need of a face lift it is time to look for kitchen remodeling ideas for your kitchen that will improve its functionality and appearance for you and your family.

The biggest problem in many kitchens is not having enough storage space or not having enough storage where it is most needed. When laying out a kitchen design spend some time thinking about where the major appliances and sink will be placed. If you use a kitchen design contractor have him draw a scaled sketch of the design so you can see where the major appliances and sink will fit into the floor plan.  Where the major appliances and sink are located determines where kitchen cabinets will be needed to store the items used around them. The sink, dishwasher, and trash compactor need to be in immediate proximity to one another.

The refrigerator should not be more than a step or two from the main counter work area. Having ample storage space beside the refrigerator and sink areas will also make the room more convenient for food preparation.

If your kitchen is functionally sufficient for your needs and you still want to freshen up the general appearance without spending a lot of money remodeling, consider kitchen cabinet refacing. Refacing the cabinet doors, drawer fronts and hardware can change the entire look of the kitchen at a fraction of the cost of replacing all the cabinets. This is an excellent option if your existing cabinets are serviceable but you are simply tired of how they look.

If you don’t want to replace the existing cabinets or the door and drawer fronts consider taking them to a cabinet shop for refinishing. This is another inexpensive option that can give your kitchen a new look and save you money.

Consider a pantry closet for storage of food items and large dishware items. The pantry does not have to be in the kitchen but it should be close by as in a passage way to an adjoining room. Frequently pantry closets are located in the garage space jut off the kitchen. This makes it convenient to the kitchen and the car while unloading grocery items for storage. A pantry closet is a lot cheaper to build than buying the several cabinets required for an equal amount of storage space.

Your kitchen remodeling ideas should be well thought out before beginning the remodeling project. After all, you want the most important room in the house to be functional and look great.
