Installing a New Sink

Installing a Sink Basin

A bathroom sink can be installed as a stand-alone unit such as a pedestal sink or it can be installed in a vanity unit. A vanity unit will provide extra storage space below the sink plus a counter top that the sink basin sets in. Another option is to install a corner basin.

The pedestal unit is hollow and conceals all the plumbing. The pedestal unit also adds support to the basin. The corner basin is suitable for a small room. The plumbing and wastepipe can be connected from either of the two adjacent walls and concealed by boxing in the corner.

Installing a new sink or sink basin in a vanity:

  1. If you are installing a replacement sink or basin you can use the existing plumbing connection for the waste drain and water supply. If it’s a new installation you must determine how the plumbing will run to connect to the sink. Whether you are installing a new sink or installing a sink basin the process is the same.

  2. When positioning the sink or basin allow enough room for the average size person to comfortably use it such as leaning over it when washing and the height of the sink from the floor.

  3. The typical height should be between 28 – 32 inches from the floor. When the position and height have been decided insure that the sink is level using a spirit level. Place a length of wood across the sink if there isn’t a flat surface to place the level.

  4. Determine and mark the wall for the fixture holes. Place a length of wood between the marks and check the horizontal distance with a spirit level before cutting the holes.

  5. If you are fitting an inset sink or basin in a vanity unit prepare the work top or surface first. Before starting to cut the hole the measurements should be carefully checked. If a template is not supplied with the basin simply place the basin upside down on the surface and draw a template of the shape on the top.

  6. Use a flat bit to drill a hole large enough to fit the jig saw blade. Cut the hole with the jigsaw in the surface top.

  7. Place the sink or basin in the opening and check that it fits properly. Make minor adjustments as necessary.

  8. Place mastic or sealing strip all around the outside of the hole. Push the sink or basin firmly into position by pressing all around to ensure a watertight seal. When you are satisfied it should be sitting squarely in position. Check with a spirit level before tightening fixture clips underneath the surface.

Installing a pedestal sink:

  1. To install a pedestal sink set the basin on the pedestal and check that it is level.

  2. Mark the wall through the fixing holes for the plumbing then remove the basin and pedestal before cutting the holes.

  3. Cut the plumbing holes.

  4. Rest the basin on the pedestal and make the plumbing connections. Then carefully ease the pedestal and basin into the correct position.

  5. Screw the basin to the wall and the pedestal to the floor.

Install a corner basin:

  1. For a wall hung basin or corner basin hold the basin in position.

  2. Mark the position for the mounting bracket on the wall.

  3. Attach the bracket to the wall securely. Use the spirit level to insure that it is level.

  4. Place the basin on the bracket and connect the plumbing.

Install the fixture and you are all done.
