Clogged toilets
are frequently the results of low water flow
toilets. Toilet tanks use to contain 4-5 gallons of
water for flushing. The low water saving toilet
only uses half this amount of water and it isn’t
uncommon to have to flush the toilet more than once
to get the waste to go down. So much for saving
water!
A toilet also can become clogged by dropped objects
into it. Small children are notorious for placing
objects in the toilet just to watch them disappear.
The flowing suggestions are for how to plunge a
toilet.
When a toilet becomes clogged the first thing to
try
is breaking up the clog by plunging the drain with
a toilet plunger, also known as a plumber’s helper.
They are easy to use by anyone.
This
technique is usually all it takes for unclogging a
toilet. You should have one nearby every toilet in
the house to avoid the toilet from
overflowing if it should become clogged. The
plunger should have an elongated bell shape to
effectively plunge a toilet. As you plunge the bell
folds up so that the shape of the plunger becomes
flat around the toilet outlet.
·
A plunger always works better if you put enough
water into the toilet to cover the plunger.
Plunging the plunger quickly several times usually
loosens the clog.
·
If the plunging doesn’t loosen the clog, you will
need to use a drain auger to snake out the clog.
·
To plunge a toilet fill the bowl about half full of
water.
·
Push the bell shaped end of the plunger down into
the outlet to maintain a tight seal.
·
Rapidly pump 10 to 15 times with short strokes. If
the water doesn’t flush down, try a drain auger.
If you have to resort to an auger to clear the
toilet use the following method.
·
Remove any filters or stoppers in the sink and
guide the auger through the drain opening.
·
Gently work the auger around the pipe bends.
·
When you have snagged the blockage pull the auger
back a little to free it.
·
Turn the handle of the auger to bore through the
clog and then push it through the pipe or pull it
out through the drain.
If feeding an auger through the drain doesn’t work,
try feeding it through a system cleanout port in
the basement.
