How a Washing Machine Works

Introduction:

Washing machines are a very important and simple home appliances that can be found in most homes. Without a washing machine you would be making several trips to the local laundry mat every week or doing your washing by hand.

The washing machine is connected to the hot and cold water supplies for the water that is used for washing the clothes. A motorized tub is fitted inside the structure that fills with various selected water levels for churning and washing the clothes. The machine is fitted with a drain pump that empties the tub when the washing cycle is completed. This is basically how a washing machine works.

There are many different style washing machines that vary from the simple to more complex models. Contemporary washing machines are technologically advanced with many automatic features. Their advanced features automate almost every task involved in washing clothes.

Washing machines are available in many different models and sizes to accommodate the homeowner needs. The different models offer all kinds of different features. The efficiency and performance of a washing machine depends on these features.

All automatic washing machines use water, detergent and electricity to do the cleaning job. The amount of water and electricity usage depends on the features built into a particular model.

How a Washing Machine Works:

Some washing machines load from the top while others load from the front. But all washing machines are more like large tubs that fill up with water and when turned on agitates to clean the clothes. After cleaning the tub spins to wring out the water.

Apart from these basic features and functions a washing machine may have other sophisticated functions with appropriate settings and controls. New and technologically advanced washing machines are incorporated with an electric timer. All you need to do is just set the time and the machine will do the rest and then will automatically shut-off when the washing is done. This is a far better method for washing clothes than the old fashion ringer machine of not so long ago.

The best washing machine models:

The top loading washing machine model is the most popular washing machine sold today. The front loading model has some good features but the biggest problem with them is the door seal often leaks during the wash cycle dumping a lot of water on your laundry room floor. On a positive note the door seal is easy to replace by most DIY homeowners.

Combination washing machine dryers have become popular but they are front loaders that also have leaky door seal problems. The all around best washing machine is a standard top loader without too many automatic features. Keep your choice simple and basic and your machine can last for many years. It is not uncommon for a basic top loader washing machine to last twenty years or more.

That is the basics of how a washing machine works. As a side tip, to improve your washing machine longevity, always leave the lid open until the inside of the machine is completely dry. This will prevent corrosion of the tub that will eventually lead to tub leaks.
