Freezer Maintenance Tips
How to Care for a Freezer
Introduction: Proper care and
maintenance of your freezer will not only improve
efficiency and performance, but will save energy
dollars and help your food contents to last longer.
To facilitate maintaining your freezer and increase
its service life it should never be placed directly
near a heat source, outside in warm climates, or
where the sun will shine directly on it. Under
these conditions it will have to work harder than
it needs to and increase the operating cost. Place
it in a cool, level and dry space, with adequate
clearance at the back for good air circulation and
insures there is adequate overhead space to open
the freezer door.
Freezer Maintenance tips:
1.
Check the seal occasionally to ensure proper
sealing. If the seal is not adequate, the door may
require an adjustment or the seal may need to be
replaced.
2.
Defrost and clean the freezer regularly. Ice
build-up will lower its efficiency. A manual
defrost chest freezer only needs to be defrosted
one a year or longer.
3.
Keep the freezer locked if there are small children
in the household.
4.
Vacuum any exposed condenser coils regularly to
ensure proper air circulation.
5.
Keep temperature constant to keep the contents from
spoiling.
6.
Label and date food contents for quick retrieval,
and ensure that foods are properly rotated.
7.
In the event of a lower outage do not open the
freezer door, especially on an upright freezer.
Without power a chest freezer can maintain the
contents at a frozen state for up to three days, if
left closed.
In the event you are relocating (moving) take
precautions to preserve the contents and the unit
when moving freezers.
1.
Lay an upright freezer down for safer transport.
Turn it on its side with the hinges up, to ensure
the door doesn't open.
2.
Securing the door shut to prevent movement and
protect the hinges.
3.
Remove any glass shelving before moving the
appliance.
4.
When you get to your final destination wait at
least a half hour before plugging the freezer in to
ensure the oil in the compressor has had time to
drain back to its proper place.
5.
After an extended period in outside freezing
weather the freezer may not appear to be operating
after being plugged in. It may take a while for it
to adjust to the warmer room temperature before the
thermostat tells it to operate.
If you follow these freezer maintenance tips your
freezer should give you years of dependable
service.
